Central Gippsland Health Service is the major provider of health services and residential aged care services in Wellington Shire, covering virtually the entire municipality except for Yarram and district.

The organisation has more than 70 acute beds, close to 180 high and low care residential aged care beds, as well as 15 independent living units. Its acute services include a 24 hour, seven day a week Emergency Department, operating theatres, day procedure unit, oncology and dialysis services.

The Health Service comprises:

  • Acute Services situated at Sale, Maffra and Heyfield
  • Community Services provided throughout the Shire of Wellington, excluding Yarram
  • Residential Aged Care Services at Sale, Maffra and Heyfield

It serves an immediate population of 42,000 in Central Gippsland, while acute specialist services reach a wider community in East Gippsland and parts of South Gippsland.

MEDICAL IMAGING EXTENDS BULK BILLING

The Medical Imaging Unit at Central Gippsland Health Service has extended bulk billing to all its general radiology patients.

Until now only pensioners and healthcare card holders were bulk billed for their services.

The opportunity for the Unit to bulk bill was first mooted late last year when the Federal Government introduced an incentive to bulk bill. It is in keeping with the health service values of social justice and after an internal evaluation, it was decided to implement the bulk bill system from February 2010.

Medical Imaging Business Unit Manager, Michael Coleman, said it would be of great benefit to clients.

“Bulk Billing simplifies the process for patients because the Unit claims the fee direct from Medicare,” Mr Coleman said. “This means the patient does not have to pay us first, and then make the claim back from Medicare.

“Overall it will cost the patient less.”
