Central Gippsland Health Service is the major provider of health services and residential aged care services in Wellington Shire, covering virtually the entire municipality except for Yarram and district.

The organisation has more than 70 acute beds, close to 180 high and low care residential aged care beds, as well as 15 independent living units. Its acute services include a 24 hour, seven day a week Emergency Department, operating theatres, day procedure unit, oncology and dialysis services.

The Health Service comprises:

  • Acute Services situated at Sale, Maffra and Heyfield
  • Community Services provided throughout the Shire of Wellington, excluding Yarram
  • Residential Aged Care Services at Sale, Maffra and Heyfield

It serves an immediate population of 42,000 in Central Gippsland, while acute specialist services reach a wider community in East Gippsland and parts of South Gippsland.

Managing Chronic Health Better

Central Gippsland Health Service is, for the first time, offering the popular Better Health Self Management program for people with chronic conditions.

This accredited course is suitable for those with arthritis, lung or heart disease, diabetes and many other health conditions.

The program covers topics that are common to all those learning to live with ongoing health problems and aims to empower patients by providing information and teaching skills and techniques to improve self-care and doctor patient interaction. The ultimate goal is improving quality of life.

Research has shown that people who attend the course gain significant improvement in their general health. They experience reduced distress about their health, as well as reduced fatigue, disability and limitation in their daily activities.

The program helps individuals take control of their condition and become an active self manager, which can involve:
